Career Education 9 Portfolios

All grade 9 students are required to have a portfolio as a part of Heath and Career Education 9. As most of you do not have a portfolio from a previous year, I have created several files that we will use to update with your personal information. The files will ensure that you have a portfolio that is started that can be added to in your future highschoo years.

Here are the requiremnets for your portforlio for the 2012 - 2013 school year:
- A cover page with your name, address, phone number, and picture. ( I have your school pictures to cut and paste onto this page)
- A cover letter applying to a company/business of your choice from saskjobs.ca. There is a template below. You can use this to reference off of in the future when you are applying for jobs.
- A resume
- A page that showcases your skills
- A page that displays your extracurricular involvement and awards and achievements from your grade 8 and 9 school years. (If you do not participate in extracurricular activities and do not have any awards or achievements, you may change the headings to Hobbies and Interests and People who Inspire Me.
- A reflection on your community service work in Christian Ethics class. The criteria is listed below.
- A printout of your careercruising.com suggestions.
- Your report card and attendance profiles. (I have these for yout to place in your portfolios.
- A visual representatin of who you are. We will be making a collage that you can include pictures of yourself doing your favorite acitvites or images from the internet that represent your favorite things and who you are.
Keep in mind that the list above must be completed by the end of the semester.
You are highly reccommended to bring any pictures, awards, achievements, certificates, etc that you have recieved in the last few years. I can photocopy these so that they can be included in your porfolio.

The Files for Your Portfolio

Here is the info for your portfolio...

Front Page - The file below will be the very first page in your portfolio. I have your school pictures printed out to accompany this so there is no need to copy and paste any image onto this file. We will cut them out with scissors and paste them.

My School - You will place this right after the front page in your portfolio. This will let employers know about your educational background.

Cover Letter - Below is a template for your cover letter. You will log onto saskjobs.ca and find a job of your interest (this should be a job that you could apply for today if you wanted to). You will then fill in the cover letter template below and relate it to the job you have chosen. You will change your name and contact information, the employers name and contact information, and the skills and abilities mentioned in the letter.

Skills Page - We will look through the document below as a class. This document will explain to us the different types of skills and learning styles that are out there. We will pick and choose a few that best suit us and apply them into a skills page that will be printed out and placed into our portfolio.

Resume - You will use the resume template below to suit who you are. You will include your personal information, your objective, your skills and abilities, education, any previous employment or volunteer work that you have done, and references.

Community Service Reflection

In Grade 9 you are required to volunteer 10 hours of your time (outside of school) to non-profit organizations in the Battlefords. (these are to be placed in your portfolio, only photocopies)
Throughout the semester you have completed your hours, it is through reflection that one is able to look back on their volunteer experience and see the value and importance it has. Please complete the following reflection to help you see the value and importance in the hours that you completed.
The essence of Jesus' teachings is encompassed in genuine love and unselfish social service.
Please answer the following in paragraph form with complete sentences.

1. What?

Description of service work, summary, hours worked, contribution type – direct or indirect, personal reaction to the work, any highlights or lowlights (interesting, funny, challenging, or not- so-interesting moments), skills required to contribute .

2. So What?
Experiences, lessons, reflection – What can you learn from the work that you did, that could be important later in life? What can you learn about yourself? About the organization? About the people you helped? What would you do differently if you had the chance? Why is volunteer work important for the community?

3. Now What?
Future service work – What kind of service work do you see yourself doing next? How would your skills match the needs of that agency? How many hours do you expect to do?
If you have not yet done your community service, answer the question "What kind of community service would you like to do to fulfill your required time and why?"

Extracurricular, Awards or My Hobbies/Interests , People Who Inspire Me - This document is to share with people a little bit more about who you are, what your have accomplished so far, and what you like to do.
